Description
Cyclic heptapeptide derived from Melanotan II (the side effects of MT-2 led to PT-141’s development). Activates MC3R and MC4R in the CNS to enhance sexual desire and arousal centrally (not peripherally like PDE5 inhibitors). FDA-approved (Vyleesi) for acquired hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.
Benefits:
Increased sexual desire and arousal in both men and women; treatment of HSDD (FDA-approved in women); potential benefit in male erectile dysfunction (especially psychogenic); works centrally through brain pathways (different mechanism than Viagra/Cialis); no cardiovascular vasodilation mechanism.
Side Effects:
Nausea (~40% of users – most common); vomiting; flushing; headache; transient focal hyperpigmentation; blood pressure elevation (transient); injection site reactions; contraindicated in patients with high cardiovascular risk; priapism (rare)
